Featherstone Rovers Chairman Mark Campbell is supportive of comments made by Leigh owner Derek Beaumont in light of Simon Grix’s comments about the 1895 Cup. Beaumont, whose company, AB Sundecks, is the title sponsor of the competition, says the concept has great merits.
In relation to the comments made by Grix in regards to the AB Sundecks 1895 Cup, Featherstone Rovers would like to affirm the opinion that the 1895 Cup is a great concept and provides clubs from outside of Super League with a realistic chance of reaching Wembley. The competition gives fans, players and coaches a chance to experience a prestigious event at Wembley Stadium and more importantly win a trophy which is great for both fans and players.
Rovers chairman Mark Campbell said: “Our Head Coach and players were very keen on reaching the final of the 1895 Cup, and are disappointed that we were not able to progress when we visited Widnes Vikings last Wednesday evening. Player welfare is always at the forefront of our minds and it’s unfortunate that both Widnes and Sheffield Eagles play on artificial surfaces. Some of our players were carrying injuries from previous games, therefore, we made a few changes following a tough month of rugby league.
"Our focus must remain on the Championship and the play-offs but we still fielded a strong team against Widnes and the lads battled hard in the midweek game. We wish all quarter finalists the best of luck and can’t wait to watch the final of the 1895 Cup at Wembley in August."
