MATCH REPORT: ROVERS SLUMP TO HALIFAX LOSS

FEATHERSTONE slumped to a disappointing 28-8 defeat at the hands of Halifax in the final home game of the regular season.

The Rovers were second best throughout as they failed to recover from a slow start, which saw them trail by three scores at the interval.

Jon Sharp’s side made a bright start to the second period but failed to take their chances, allowing Halifax to kick on and seal the home side’s fate.

Halifax hooker Brandon Moore opened the scoring when he darted from dummy half. Steve Tyrer successfully added the extras for 6-0.

Featherstone fell further behind when Mitch Calahane extended Halifax’s advantage, scoring from close range, Tyrer’s conversion double the visitors’ lead.

A looping John Davies pass was well taken well by Misi Taulapapa as the Rovers hit back 22 minutes in, though Kyran Johnson was unable to improve the Samoan winger’s effort.

‘Fax centre Tyrer added two penalty goals to his tally prior to half-time, meaning the away team held a 16-4 lead going into the second period.

Despite making a bright start to closing 40 minutes, Halifax broke the Rovers’ spirit as Ben Heaton powered over to claim an impressive solo try.

Matters worsened for Featherstone - 11 minutes from time - when Rob Worrincy raced 80 metres to ensure victory for Richard Marshall’s in-form side.

Frankie Mariano crossed for a consolation Rovers score during the closing stages, though Johnson was unable to help the hosts into double figures.
